ACTION: Tell Democracy Now that Biology and Science Are Real and that Capitulating to an Ideology That Says They Aren’t Is Dangerous.

The Issue

On October 22, Democracy Now covered the New York Times’s misleading, biased, and journalistically flawed article claiming that the current administration is attempting to “define trans people out of existence.”  Democracy Now obviously supports the lie that biological sex and science are not real. This is a dangerous precedent being set by media, that are toeing a political ideological line which refutes reality and drives western cultures closer to totalitarianism.

“The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lie will now be accepted as truth and truth be defamed as a lie, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world—and the category of truth versus falsehood is among the mental means to this end – is being destroyed.”
Hannah Arendt, Origins of Totalitarianism, 1951

Dear Democracy Now,

On your 10/22/18 programming you had Chase Strangio, a trans-identified activist/lawyer on your show to denounce the New York Times’s misleading, biased, and journalistically-flawed story of the current administration’s purported efforts to eliminate trans-identified individuals.

The administration’s stated purpose of clarifying that biological sex is real and immutable was framed by Chase Strangio as a lie. In fact, it is Strangio’s statement that is a lie and this lie was allowed to stand unchallenged by Democracy Now’s obviously biased hosts, Amy Goodman and Nereem Shaikh.

You have an obligation to uphold journalistic standards. One of those standards is to report the truth. By leaving this lie unchallenged, you have set a dangerous precedent. Your show capitulated to an outrageous, blatant lie, one that everyone knows is a lie but is afraid, in an increasingly McCarthyist political environment, to name as a lie. Our biological sex is as real as anything gets and it is immutable. This is a scientific fact (and the most basic common sense). The lie you perpetrated, by allowing it to stand uncontested on your show is, as the quote by Hannah Arendt above makes abundantly clear, the “substitution of lies for factual truth” that totalitarianism is built on.

These lies – that our sex is not real and immutable, that we are not a sexually dimorphic species, and that these are not irrefutable scientific facts – are being codified into law and institutionalized around the globe. This sows chaos in the use of language and in the recording of crime and public health statistics. It  thwarts the ability of children to understand who they are and to live free of bodily damaging drugs and life-long medical dependency. It erases the freedom of women to speak about themselves as a distinct category of people worthy of civil rights protection and to organize for their civil rights. As Arendt said, “our sense by which we take our bearings in the real world…is being destroyed.” It is being aided and abetted by a media that supports an ideology that has no grounding in material reality.

It is paramount that you stop lying to the American public, as we stand on the threshold of totalitarianism that is unquestioningly taking root within western cultures. I urge you to examine your role in this process.

Sincerely,

[YOUR NAME]
